K-1 Assistant Summer Camp Instructor
The Assistant Instructor will be located at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences providing hands-on, informal science activities and lesson plans. Successful candidates will have the ability to communicate an enthusiasm for natural science for rising K-1 grade camps.
Pay:
Seasonal, temporary position. Hourly pay is $16.00 per hour, 40 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
- Candidate must be available to teach camps June 23-27, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-August 1, and August 4-8.
- Meet deadlines, comply with Summer Camps Staff Manual, and any other duties assigned by supervisor.
- Interact professionally with Museum staff, guardians, and rising K-1 grade campers.
- In the spring:
- Attend all Summer Camps Orientation dates, Saturday, March 29 from 9:00am – 5:00pm, Saturday, April 12 from 9:00am – 5:00pm, and April 26 from 9:00am – 5:00pm. Flexibility needed as dates may change with advance notice due to extenuating circumstances.
- Collaborate with Museum staff and lead instructor to design stations and games to promote camper engagement. Assistant Instructor will design 1-2 lesson plans with materials each week in collaboration with lead instructor and Museum staff.
- In the summer:
- Staff will choose to work Monday – Friday either shift a: 8:15am – 4:15pm or shift b: 9:00am-5:00pm. Staff hours will select their work shift during camp orientation. Hours may vary before and after listed camp hours for program setup or guardian concerns.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
- Assistant Instructors will work as a team with Camp Administration staff, Lead Instructor, Museum staff, and interns while assisting the Lead Instructor to provide support by leading transitions, games, stations, and any other duties assigned.
- Assistant Instructors will lead their designed lesson plan each week and can lead additional lesson plans with approval from Lead Instructor and Camp Administration staff.
- Assistant Instructor will help prepare camp paperwork, maintain camp program supplies including daily clean-up of classrooms and equipment, and follow up with Manager of Summer Camps as needed.
Necessary Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently with minimal guidance from supervisor.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs., walk long distances, work in various weather conditions, and traverse uneven terrain.
- Submit to a criminal background check.
- Comply with The Friends of the Museum and state of North Carolina policies.
- CPR with AED or First Aid is helpful.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- High school degree/GED, be 18 years of age or have previous work experience.
- Previous experience working in a formal or informal education setting leading small or large group activities or working with children with disabilities who require extra support or modifications is helpful.
