4-6 Lead Summer Camp Instructor
The Lead Instructor will be located at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences providing hands-on, informal science activities and lesson plans. Successful candidates will have the ability to communicate an enthusiasm for natural science for rising 4-6 grade camps.
Pay:
Seasonal, temporary position. Hourly pay is $16.00 – $19.00 per hour, 40 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
- Candidate must be available to teach camps June 22-26, July 6-10, July 13-17, July 20-24, and July 28-31.
- Meet deadlines, comply with Summer Camps Staff Manual, and any other duties assigned by supervisor.
- Interact professionally with Museum staff, guardians, and rising K-1 grade campers.
- In the spring:
- Attend all Summer Camps Orientation dates, Saturday, March 28th from 9:00am – 4:00pm, Saturday, April 25th from 9:00am – 4:00pm. A 3rd orientation date will be scheduled in May for staff to practice and review camp activities.
- Collaborate with Museum staff and assistant instructor to design stations and games to promote camper engagement. Assistant Instructor will design at least 1 lesson plan with materials each week in collaboration with lead instructor and Museum staff.
- In the summer:
- Staff will work Monday – Friday 8:15am – 4:15pm. Hours may vary before and after listed camp hours for program setup or guardian concerns.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
- Instructor will lead camps by teaching activities, games, and lesson plans from camp lesson plan. The instructor will help prepare camp paperwork, maintain camp program supplies including daily clean-up of classrooms and equipment, and follow up with Manager of Summer Camps as needed.
- Instructor will be delegated tasks as needed and work as a team with Camp Administration staff, Assistant Instructor, Museum staff, and interns.
- Instructor will drive state passenger van on camp single day field trip.
Necessary Skills and Abilities:
- Have a NC drivers license.
- Demonstrated ability working in a formal or informal education setting leading small or large group activities.
- Ability to use the principles of Universal Design to implement program adaptations that make camp activities and experiences accessible for all campers.
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently with minimal guidance from supervisor.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs., walk long distances, work in various weather conditions, and traverse uneven terrain.
- Submit to a criminal background check.
- Comply with The Friends of the Museum and State of North Carolina policies.
- CPR with AED or First Aid is helpful.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Previous experience working in an informal or formal educational setting.
- College degree or equivalent experience.
- Previous experience working in a formal or informal education setting leading small or large group activities or working with children with disabilities who require extra support or modifications is helpful.
