[RALEIGH, N.C.] – Be amazed by the diversity and uniqueness of ocean life in a photographic tour of the oceans’ wildest inhabitants with Duke Professor Sönke Johnsen. With “Art Meets Science in the Open Sea” – held at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Thursday, April 13 at 7 p.m. – Johnsen delves into the optical and visual tricks that open-ocean animals perform, like “fire-breathing” shrimp that spew bioluminescent fluid when distressed.

Johnsen originally trained in mathematics and art, and he has studied camouflage, signaling and non-human visual modalities for the last 27 years. Johnsen’s field work primarily involves open-ocean research cruises that use SCUBA and deep-sea submersibles. In addition to exploring, he is interested in improving communication between theoretical and experimental scientists and between scientists and artists. His research has been presented in numerous magazines, newspapers and television shows.

Tickets are $10; free for Members. Tickets include the presentation, followed by Q&A, plus an early evening exploration of “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP.” The exhibition is open from 5:30–7 p.m. The presentation begins at 7 p.m.; recommended for ages 12 and older.

Developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP” takes visitors to the depths of our oceans through the lens of Cameron’s underwater cameras and his other incredible technological innovations that have enabled us to see the least-known places on Earth. “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP” runs through May 7, 2023.
