[RALEIGH, N.C.] – What exactly are foraminifera? What makes them so special? Join oceanographer Kate Davis to hear how some of the smallest organisms in the open ocean can tell us so much about how the oceans responded to climate change in the past and what the future could be like for our watery world. Davis presents “The Secret Life and Afterlife of Miniature Marine Fossils” at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Come early and gain discounted entry to the Museum’s current special exhibition, “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP,” which explores filmmaker James Cameron’s extensive career as a deep-sea explorer and his many history-making expeditions.
Davis, an assistant professor at North Carolina State University, has always been fascinated by the natural world and especially the ocean. She received her PhD from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California Davis, and recently joined the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at NC State. Her research interests are “at the intersection of modern and paleo-oceanography, and include chemical oceanography, micropaleontology and paleoclimatology.”
Tickets are $10; free for Members. Tickets include the presentation, followed by Q&A, plus an evening exploration of “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP.” The exhibition is open from 5:30–7 p.m. The presentation begins at 7 p.m.; recommended for ages 12 and older.
This is the first of three presentations held in conjunction with the Museum’s special exhibition, “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP.” Still to come:
- Thursday, March 23: Steve Ross, Chief Scientist on the 2022 Titanic Survey Expedition, presents “Returning to the Wreck of RMS Titanic.”
- Thursday, April 13: Sönke Johnsen, Sensory Biologist at Duke University, presents “A Tale of Two Brothers: Art Meets Science in the Open Sea.”
Developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP” takes visitors to the depths of our oceans through the lens of Cameron’s underwater cameras and his other incredible technological innovations that have enabled us to see the least-known places on Earth. “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP” runs through May 7, 2023. “James Cameron – CHALLENGING THE DEEP” is a traveling exhibition produced by the Australian National Maritime Museum, in association with the Avatar Alliance Foundation, and is toured internationally by Flying Fish.
