Science TODAY: Roach jumping: How do they do it?

  • Friday, April 10, 2026
  • 11:30am - 12:00pm
  • Downtown Raleigh

Photo of a globe-shaped theater taken from the ceiling looking down with people standing on balconies and seated on the main floor. A presenter stages on a small stage with a large image of a frog projected behind the stage.

Today’s Topic

Cockroaches are incredibly mobile: they can walk, run, crawl, fly, and jump! I research how they jump, and how they use jumping to navigate their surroundings. Participants can expect to learn about common roaches found in NC they might encounter in their house, and why they’re so agile and mobile.

Today’s Expert

Nicolás Galvez, Researcher in the museum’s AntLab and graduate student at NC State
