The landscape of the South would have looked much different if you visited in early settlement times. Forests would have seemed to go on forever. One type of ecosystem you would have encountered was the Longleaf Pine Savannah. With vast, open understories and an amazing diversity of plants and animals, this ecosystem is a wonder to behold. Longleaf Pine forests now occupy only 3 percent of their original range, and require careful management, including frequent fire. In this class, we will talk about human impacts on these forests and uncover some of the amazing adaptations of plants and animals that are unique to this habitat.
