Science Café: Our Cosmic Origins and Place in the Universe

  • Thursday, March 20, 2025
  • 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Grab a bite from the Daily Planet Café and join host Chris Smith for our monthly Science Café. Gather with other curious minds at this after-hours event for an informal presentation and conversation about current science topics with guest experts. The Daily Planet Café is open 5–8pm with a full menu during the Science Café.

Join Dr. Rachel Smith, head of the NCMNS Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Lab and professor at Appalachian State University, for a cosmic adventure.

Dr. Smith will share how her work as an astrophysicist studying forming stars has taken her from incredible ground-based astronomy on Maunakea, Hawaii, to the stratosphere on the world’s largest airborne observatory, and even to the depths of a methane seep as a guest scientist on the submersible ALVIN. We will hear how all of this work connects to our living planet, our cosmic origins, and our ongoing search for life beyond Earth.
