  • Saturday, October 14, 2023
  • 11:45am - 3:00pm

This event is canceled due to weather conditions likely making viewing the eclipse impossible. The eclipse will stream live online in the Daily Planet Theater from noon-3pm.

Join Museum astrophysicist Dr. Patrick Treuthardt on Bicentennial Plaza outside the Museum to view a partial solar eclipse! Visitors can visit the plaza located outside the front entrance of the Nature Exploration Center (directly across the street from the Legislative Building) and gaze at the Sun through our special solar telescopes. The partial eclipse will begin at 11:56 am and reach its maximum coverage of the Sun(leaving a crescent-shaped Sun) at 1:20 pm. The eclipse will end at 2:46 pm. The telescopes will be set up weather permitting. In the event of dense cloud cover or rain, the telescopes will not be set up.

Looking directly at the Sun can damage your eyes. Only view the eclipse through approved eclipse glasses, eclipse projectors, or taking a look through the Museum’s solar filtering telescopes. The Museum is not providing eclipse glasses for this event. View detailed information on how to safely view the eclipse in English and Spanish.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and blocks sunlight from reaching Earth. The October 14 event is an annular eclipse, meaning the Moon will not completely block out the sun as in a total eclipse. In Raleigh, North Carolina, the Moon will cover approximately 30-40% of the Sun. The view will look like the Moon took a bite out of the Sun!
