Lifelong Longleaf Hike: Holly Shelter

  • Wednesday, May 08, 2024
  • 7:00am - 6:00pm

Our spring hikes will be in the Land of the Longleaf Pine in partnership with the North Carolina Botanical Garden’s Saving Our Savannas program series.  The Botanical Garden, with partner organizations, has developed an exciting schedule of hikes, lectures, and workshops covering the history, ecology, and culture of longleaf pine communities.  Learn more about this exciting program series.

The longleaf pine story continues with our exploration of Holly Shelter Game Land in Pender County.  Here we will explore the longleaf pine savannas and associated pocosins rich in carnivorous plants and colorful orchids. Holly Shelter, North Carolina’s first state game land, is managing longleaf pine with an aggressive burn regime and restoring longleaf pine to areas that had been converted to loblolly pine plantations when under private ownership.
