We will explore the land of the longleaf pine at Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Moore County. The longleaf pine forest originally stretched from southeastern Virginia to Florida and then westward to Texas. Once covering 92 million acres, now only about 3% of the original forest remains. You will get a sense of what the once magnificent forest looked like as we discuss the reasons for its decline. After a picnic lunch at the Weymouth Woods Tract, we will visit the virgin longleaf pine in the Boyd Tract, including the oldest longleaf pine known.
