Lake Mattamuskeet and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuges host one of the largest concentrations of winter waterfowl along the East Coast. Learn how to identify waterfowl, raptors and other bird species. Short hikes and easy viewing from the Museum bus make this an ideal trip for both novice and seasoned birders. Birders flock from all over to see the winter waterfowl spectacle in these coastal refuges. Black bears are often seen on this trip as well. We will hike in a remnant virgin forest in Pettigrew State Park and visit historic Somerset Place on the edge of Phelps Lake.
