City Nature Challenge After Dark

  • 8:00pm Saturday, April 29, 2023 - 12:00am Sunday, April 30, 2023

The City Nature Challenge is an international citizen science event that encourages people to document as many wild living things in their area as possible.

Join us at Prairie Ridge to explore the species that make use of our grounds at night! We’ll have multiple light stations to attract insects, we’ll loan out black light flashlights so you can look for caterpillars (many glow under UV!), and help you find great places to record nighttime sounds. Bring a camera or phone so you can take photos and/or audio recordings to contribute to the Triangle Area’s City Nature Challenge project on iNaturalist.

This program is best suited for ages 8+, but everyone is welcome. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp, a phone or other camera (pre-load iNaturalist or Seek on your phone if possible), and a water bottle. Please dress for the weather and wear closed-toed shoes and long pants. We have cameras that you can borrow if you do not have your own! Head toward the Outdoor Classroom for a quick orientation upon arrival, a short 3–5 minute walk down the gravel road. Please feel free to bring a picnic dinner, but plan to take any trash with you when you leave as we do not have a trash service. The gate to the road will open at 4:50pm.
