Calling all bird lovers!

Join us for a very special opportunity to celebrate our feathered friends when John Gerwin, Research Curator of Ornithology from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, visits Whiteville for a day of activities and discussion free to the public. Learn about bird behavior, local visitors, wildlife-friendly coffee, and avian anatomy.

Bird Walk

Join John Gerwin and NCMNSW for a morning of bird watching at the Helms Nature Preserve in Whiteville. This beautiful preserve, maintained by Wildlife Action of NC, is located on private land and registration is required to receive the meeting location. 11:30am-12:30pm

Meet Me at the Museum: John Gerwin presents “Birds of Eastern NC.”

What birds might you see across the landscapes of Eastern NC? Learn what to expect in your backyard and ask your burning bird questions!


2-3pm

Meet Me at the Museum: “From Farms to Binoculars: Birds and People on Sustainable Coffee Farms in Nicaragua.”

John will talk about his work with birds and farmers on sustainable coffee plantations. Learn how coffee is grown and harvested on sites where wildlife-friendly practices are integrated into the farming systems.


3:30-4pm

Avian Anatomy

What makes a bird…a bird? Learn about bird anatomy through a dissection demonstration.
