What the dinosaurs of Utah can teach us about climate change right now

A graphic depicting two images. On the top half is an illustration of a Tarbosaurus, a large bipedal carnivorous dinosaur, placed in a tre-lined grassland. The bottom half of the graphic is a photo of a team of people carrying a large fossil across a desert landscape.

Join paleontologist and the face behind Daily Dino Guy, Evan Jevnikar, as you learn about the ground breaking research the NC Museum of Natural Sciences is conducting in Utah. In this presentation you will learn why the dinosaurs of Utah are so unique, how they reveal a dramatic shift in the story of dinosaurs, how dinosaur evolution is directly impacted by climate change, and how we can apply this to our current period of global warming.

Copies of Evan’s new book, Surviving Climate and Chaos, will be available for sale and signing by the author.

The dinosaurs of Utah are some of the most interesting species discovered in recent years. From the dog-sized Tyrannosaur known as Moros, to the burrowing species called Fona, these dinosaurs reveal a unique ancient ecosystem. But what if these species were more than just interesting relics? What if the dinosaurs of prehistoric Utah actually held crucial lessons and warnings for climate change happening right now? By combining dinosaur evolution we see in Utah with ancient climate data, we can see that dinosaurs experienced climate change that was eerily similar to today.

About our Guest Expert

Evan Jevnikar is a local paleontologist, author, and founder of Daily Dino Guy, a science communication brand that teach millions of people around the globe about dinosaurs, paleontology, geology, and biology. Evan received his Bachelor’s in Geology and the University of Kansas and received his Master’s in Biology at NC State under Dr. Lindsay Zanno. He has dug up dinosaur fossils across the United States, including species like Nanotyrannus and Fona, and conducted research on the growth of T. rex’s close cousin, Tarbosaurus. His new book Surviving Climate and Chaos explores the surprising connection between climate change and dinosaur evolution and what this can teach us about our current period of global warming.
