Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I order the plate?

You can order your dino plate online through myNCDMV – no need to go into a DMV office!

  • First, go to payments.ncdot.gov (the online registration and payment system used by NCDMV). You might recognize this interface from renewing your vehicle registration!
  • Once you’re in, click on “Vehicle Services” and select “Order a Special or Personalized Plate.”
  • You’ll then be able to choose a plate from a list of custom plate options – you can scroll or search for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences dino plate.
  • Then, you’ll be prompted to enter your current license plate information and the last five digits of your car’s title number.
  • From there, you’ll review your order and make the payment.

Specialty plates can take up to 6-8 weeks to arrive in the mail.

2. Can I submit a paper application instead?

Yes! If you do not want to use the online system, you can mail a completed paper form with a check to the NCDMV. Enclose a check, cashier’s check, or money order (no cash accepted) – $30 for a standard (numerical) plate or $60 for a personalized plate – and mail it to:
