Lake Mattamuskeet and Phelps Lake are the two largest natural lakes in North Carolina. They host one of the largest concentrations of winter waterfowl along the East Coast. Learn how to identify waterfowl, raptors and other bird species. Short hikes and easy viewing from the Museum bus make this an ideal trip for both novice and seasoned birders. Birders flock from all over to see the winter waterfowl spectacle in these coastal refuges. We will also hike in a remnant virgin forest and visit historic Somerset Place on Phelps Lake.
