Delve into the wisdom of ancient narratives in this interactive experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:30\u20134:00pm: Performance by United Strings of Color<\/strong><br \/>\nThe young talent of the United Strings of Color Intermediate Group will charm you as they present &#8220;Ijapa and Mr. Igbin,&#8221; a delightful Yoruba folktale expressed through narration, art and original music by local composer Elmer H. Gibson. Prepare to be enchanted as a tortoise uncovers the essence of wisdom.<\/p>\n<h3>About the Story<\/h3>\n<p>Local jazz musician, writer and visual artist Elmer Gibson has adapted a Yoruba folktale from West Africa, &#8220;The Tortoise and the Wisdom of the World,&#8221; and set it to his original music for string quartet. The performance of &#8220;Ijapa and Mr. Igbin&#8221;\u00a0 (as renamed by Mr. Gibson) includes narration, music and projected artwork from Poe Elementary students. The central message of this tale is, \u201cIf you are filled with pride, you have no room for wisdom.\u201d This program is best suited for families with children ages 4\u201411.<\/p>\n<h3>About United Strings of Color<\/h3>\n<p>Founded in Raleigh, North Carolina, United Strings of Color is a trailblazing ensemble comprised of African American musicians. Since its inception in 2018, they have performed at Raleigh&#8217;s African American Cultural Festival and the North Carolina Museum of Art, with the Durham Symphony, and at the North Carolina Museum of History&#8217;s African American Cultural Celebration.
