Come hear Eleanor Spicer Rice (author of the book, &#8220;Dr. Eleanor&#8217;s Book of Common Spiders&#8221;) share strange tales of spider sex, from sweet love songs to deadly somersaults.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_86072\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86072\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-86072 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/bertone_paudax_1-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Black and white spider with bright blue on the head\" width=\"215\" height=\"159\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-86072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Matt Bertone<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Tonight&#8217;s Expert<\/h3>\n<p>Eleanor Spicer Rice, PhD, is an entomologist and science writer, as well as the author of seven books, including &#8220;Dr. Eleanor\u2019s Book of Common Spiders,&#8221; &#8220;Ants: Workers of the World,&#8221; and her most recent middle-grade book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/724363\/unseen-jungle-the-microbes-that-secretly-control-our-world-by-eleanor-spicer-rice-phd-illustrated-by-rob-wilson\/\"><em>Unseen Jungle: The Microbes That Secretly Control Our World<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; illustrated by Rob Wilson (Candlewick\/MIT Press).<\/p>\n<p>As a scientist, she presents her award-winning research at conferences across the United States. As a communicator, she writes about science for popular audiences for many publications, including <em>Our State Magazine<\/em> and <em>American Scientist<\/em>. Her books have been featured in publications such as The New York Times\u2019 Science Times, The Wall Street Journal<i>,<\/i> <em>National Geographic<\/em>, and more.<\/p>\n<p>She makes frequent television and radio appearances, and in addition to being a regular expert on the popular Discovery and Science Channel television show, &#8220;What on Earth,&#8221; she has made guest appearances on multiple radio shows, including NPR\u2019s &#8220;Science Friday,&#8221; CBC\u2019s &#8220;Quirks and Quarks,&#8221; and is a \u201cguest favorite\u201d on &#8220;Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She often speaks to children\u2019s library groups and elementary classrooms, sharing her love of the natural world and of insects, in particular.<\/p>\n<h3>About the Exhibition<\/h3>\n<p>Did you know spiders can swim, jump and even \u201cfly\u201d hundreds of miles? \u201cSpiders: Fear to Fascination\u201d spins an immersive tale, revealing how this incredibly diverse group of animals has evolved and survived for 300 million years.
