The herbarium began as a general store owned and operated by David and Isaac Wallace, brothers and German Jews who immigrated to North Carolina in the mid-1800s. The Wallaces&#8217; enterprise in herbs and roots would grow into the largest &#8220;Botanic Depot&#8221; in the United States. Statesville Land &amp; Record columnist O.C.
