{"id":61932,"date":"2021-04-08T12:23:59","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T16:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/?post_type=news&#038;p=61932"},"modified":"2023-01-20T14:14:06","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T19:14:06","slug":"dueling-dinosaurs-exhibit-update","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/news\/dueling-dinosaurs-exhibit-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Dueling Dinosaurs Exhibit Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Museum guests will get their first look at the <em>Dueling Dinosaurs<\/em> beginning Tuesday, March 30.<\/p>\n<p>On the second floor of the Museum\u2019s Nature Exploration Center (NEC), an enormous foot belonging to our <em>Triceratops <\/em>will be displayed as fossil in matrix, while a foot of the tyrannosaur will be displayed in replica.<\/p>\n<p>The selected portions of the <em>Dueling Dinosaurs<\/em> will be the public\u2019s first in-person experience of the incredible exhibit. Guests will be able to enjoy a 360-degree walk-around of the fossils, allowing observation on all sides.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/NIK_9223_edited_nikLBnew_800.jpg\" alt=\"The Triceratops foot fossil in matrix. Swain\/NCMNS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is also equipped with fascinating facts about the anatomy of the specimen and the environment the dinosaurs lived in. Swain\/NCMNS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"inner-bullet-list\">\n<li><em>Triceratops <\/em>likely had thick, fleshy footpads, similar to a hippopotamus or elephant.<\/li>\n<li><em>Triceratops<\/em> walked on its toes (digitigrade), compared to humans, who walk on their soles (plantigrade).<\/li>\n<li>Tyrannosaur feet were similar to the feet of an emu (<em>Dromaius novaehollandiae<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Like <em>Triceratops<\/em>, tyrannosaurs also walked on their toes and had three functional toes, like most of their living relatives (birds) do today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eric Lund, the SECU DinoLab Manager, shared that he hopes guests, &#8220;learn how these iconic dinosaurs moved through their environments and how they share fascinating similarities with living animals today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because the <em>Dueling Dinosaurs<\/em> fossils are so well preserved and articulated and the bones were found in life position, they will provide unique insights into the soft-tissue anatomy of these two dinosaurs.
