Poaching was rampant. Wild birds and mammals were <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.macleans.ca\/article\/1950\/10\/15\/how-we-massacred-the-passenger-pigeon\">being slaughtered by the thousands<\/a>. An out-of-control wildlife trade was making once-common animals\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanheritage.com\/return-white-tailed-deer#1\">hard to find<\/a>\u00a0and pushing rare species into extinction.<\/p>\n<p>This is the story of North America a century ago, and of Asia today.
