The Museum has dozens of excellent activities for you to do outdoors with your kids, <a href=\"https:\/\/takeachildoutside.org\/ready-set-go-outside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">starting with these<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Beth Cranford, Coordinator for the Windows on the World here at NCMNS, shares the importance of getting outside this special week and as often as possible. Beth is typically found leading activities at the Museum, like teaching children with live animals or reading stories in the Windows on the World theater. She has experience teaching all ages both inside and outdoors, and is learning new things every day from her young son:<\/p>\n<h3>Fresh perspectives from a new mom<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;There are so many things mothers (and other caregivers) do for their children, and <strong>there&#8217;s an even longer list of all the things we\u2019re told we <em>should<\/em> be doing.<\/strong> While that list of things we should or shouldn\u2019t do is incredibly long, it\u2019s our job to figure out what matters the most and how to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As an early childhood environmental educator, a top priority of mine is getting my child outside as much as possible.<\/strong> I also realize that some parents don\u2019t have the experiences or resources I do for making this happen. The goal of this, and future blog posts, is to share my experiences, both successful and not, so that we can learn together about outdoor parenting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/NIK_9225.jpg\" alt=\"Children lounge on a blanket under a summer sky.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/> Children lounge on a blanket under a tree.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry clear\">\n<h3>How the outdoors is beneficial<\/h3>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already read about the benefits of children spending time outside, here are a few links to get you started:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Infants who spend time outside in the afternoon generally sleep better at night.<\/strong> What parent doesn\u2019t need that? <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2869.2004.00435.x\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Article: \u201cThe relationship between daytime exposure to light and night-time sleep in 6-12-week old infants\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Experiences are more beneficial for forming relationships than material objects<\/strong> (new toys), with nearby experiences being as beneficial as big trips. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/12\/161215143300.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Article: \u201cThere\u2019s a science to gift giving\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>An overview of how outdoor experiences are beneficial for children\u2019s health<\/strong> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenandnature.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Children and Nature Network<\/a> includes benefits to vision, vitamin D levels, birth weight, reduced risk of obesity and improved relationship skills. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenandnature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/C-NN_NatureImprove.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Infographic: \u201cNature Can Improve Health and Wellbeing\u201d<\/a> (PDF)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We really need a movement to &#8216;Take a Child Outside <strong><em>Every Day,<\/em><\/strong><em>&#8216;<\/em> or at least to &#8216;Take a Child Outside <strong><em>Once a Week<\/em><\/strong><em>,&#8217;<\/em> so the NC Museum of Natural Sciences chooses to celebrate September 24-30 annually, as a time to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/takeachildoutside.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Take a Child Outside<\/a>.\u201d By encouraging outdoor time for one week, we hope to give adults ideas, resources, and support to initiate ongoing outdoor experiences.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be extending the Museum\u2019s support by sharing my experiences and ideas as well as answering your questions year-round.\u00a0 Look for future posts from me and feel free to contact me with your concerns and questions via <a href=\"mailto:beth.cranford@naturalsciences.org\">beth.cranford@naturalsciences.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your partner in getting kids outside,<\/p>\n<p>Beth Cranford&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>For more information about our upcoming activities, conservation news and ground-breaking research, follow @NaturalSciences on <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/naturalsciences\/\">Instagram<\/a><\/em><em>, <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/naturalsciences\">Twitter<\/a><\/em><em> and <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/naturalsciences\/\">Facebook<\/a><\/em><em>.
