{"id":3095,"date":"2015-10-07T12:06:41","date_gmt":"2015-10-07T17:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/?post_type=news&#038;p=3095"},"modified":"2015-10-07T12:06:41","modified_gmt":"2015-10-07T17:06:41","slug":"museum-ichthyologist-assists-with-tree-of-life-for-birds","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/naturalsciences.org\/calendar\/news\/museum-ichthyologist-assists-with-tree-of-life-for-birds\/","title":{"rendered":"Museum ichthyologist assists with Tree of Life \u2026 for birds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cardinals and woodpeckers evolved from a hawk-like ancestor and most of the world\u2019s water birds also appear to be a close-knit group, indicating one avian lineage quickly adapted to aquatic environments after most of the dinosaurs died out at the end of the Cretaceous period.<\/p>\n<p>These are among hundreds of other stories that make up the history of birds revealed in a massive Yale-led genomic analysis of 198 species of birds published in the Oct. 7 edition of the journal <em>Nature<\/em>. The research sheds new light on how all modern birds evolved from the only three dinosaur lineages to survive the great extinction event 66 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis represents the beginning of the end of avian phylogeny,\u201d said Rick Prum, the William Robertson Coe Professor of Ornithology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and senior author of the <em>Nature<\/em> paper. \u201cIn the next five or 10 years, we will have finished the tree of life for birds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the challenges in unravelling the Avian Tree of Life is distinguishing what constitutes evolutionary signal versus noise in genomic scale data. \u201cFrom the point of view of an evolutionary biologist, segments of DNA can have this pesky habit of evolving too fast and eroding information content over millions of years,\u201d said Alex Dornburg, research curator of ichthyology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and one of the co-authors of the study. \u201cCounter-intuitively, adding more data sometimes actually makes inferring evolutionary relationships more difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of Dornburg\u2019s research involves an ongoing collaboration with Yale-based co-author, Jeffrey Townsend. Together they are developing new methods and software to assist researchers in distinguishing where information is, or is not, in DNA sequences. By applying these methods to hundreds of genes across hundreds of species of birds, Dornburg was able to assess the utility of the avian phylogenomic dataset and mitigate potential problems. Dornburg added, \u201cThis type of work is not just applicable to birds, but is really necessary if we are to finally resolve a genomic Tree of Life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the last decade, the historical origins of ostriches and their relatives the emus have been well established, as it has for ducks, chickens and their relatives. But the evolutionary history of 90% of contemporary birds in a group called Neoaves has remained murky. The early ancestors of thousands of these species appeared to have evolved suddenly within a few million years after the extinction the non-avian dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>The research also reveals fascinating relationships among the living birds within the group. For instance, other than the ducks and the cranes, most of the world\u2019s water birds are closely related \u2014 suggesting they radiated out across the globe in aquatic niches following the extinction of dinosaurs and did not, as previously thought, evolve from multiple independent lineages. Among other tidbits discovered, the highly visual hummingbirds apparently evolved from nocturnal species of bird, and that \u201cthe ancient common ancestor of the cardinal and woodpecker in your garden was a vicious, hawk-like predator,&#8221; Prum said.<\/p>\n<p>The completion of the avian tree of life will allow researchers to definitively investigate many outstanding questions in the evolutionary history of birds, Prum said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we have the complete tree, we can start to study the patterns and processes that have given rise to all the amazing diversity of living birds.
