SUMMARY:BioBlitz with iNaturalist
DESCRIPTION:Never participated in a BioBlitz before? It’s easy and fun! Join us and learn how to get started — what you can take photos of\, what makes a good observation and how to use iNaturalist. It’s a fun way to learn about nature and contribute to citizen science! \nThis program is for ages 8 and up\, families welcome. Downloading the iNaturalist app (free) is helpful but not necessary. Please dress for the weather and wear closed-toed shoes. We will meet at the entrance gate near the kiosk. \n\nPrairie Ridge Ecostation’s Fall BioBlitz will take place from Tuesday\, October 3 through Saturday\, October 7\, 2023. Join us during our open hours (9am–4pm) and see how many observations you can submit to iNaturalist! You can make observations independently or join a BioBlitz program to learn more about BioBlitzes\, why they’re important and how to contribute!

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: The Whales of North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:A Surprisingly Rich History\, Diversity and Ecology\nShort-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) \nDr. Andrew J. Read\, Director\, Duke University Marine Laboratory \nWhales have been an important resource to North Carolina since humans first settled here\, providing coastal communities with food\, fuel and materials. The waters off North Carolina hold a surprising diversity of whales\, from humpback and right whales in coastal waters to sperm\, pilot\, and beaked whales offshore. Join us to learn about the lives of these iconic animals\, the threats they face and the work that is being done to conserve them. We will focus on some of the less familiar species that are found far from shore and are the subject of current study. \nJoin us on YouTube!\n\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
