SUMMARY:Science Cafe: How to Stop a Lava Flow
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Arianna Soldati monitoring a volcano erupting in Iceland in July 2023. \nGrab a bite from the Daily Planet Cafe and join host Chris Smith and special guests for the Science Cafe. On the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7pm\, gather with other curious minds at this after-hours event for an informal presentation and conversation about current science topics with guest experts. The Daily Planet Cafe is open 5–8pm with a full menu during the Science Cafe. \nJoin us in person in the Daily Planet Cafe\, or watch the livestream on YouTube. \nTonight’s Presentation\nLava flows can be highly destructive\, and people have tried pretty much everything to stop them\, from hosing them down to bombing them. Has anything worked? In this entertaining science café we’ll go over some incredible examples of human ingenuity and talk through how they faced up to volcanic forces of nature. \nTonight’s Expert\nDr. Arianna Soldati is an Assistant Professor in Volcanology at North Carolina State University. Her lab group works on a variety of topics\, ranging from effusive eruptions to critical minerals. She received her PhD in Geological Sciences from the University of Missouri – Columbia\, where she specialized in lava flow rheology\, i.e. how far and how fast can lava flow. She has delivered over 50 public lectures and led countless outreach activities\, and she has written for Scientific American\, National Geographic\, and CNN\, among others. Arianna also founded her own traveling outreach program\, Science on Wheels\, which brings the science done by graduate students to adults living in rural communities\, giving them the chance to meet a scientist right in their hometown and promoting a positive perception of science.
