SUMMARY:Lifelong Hike: Weymouth Woods
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the land of the longleaf pine at Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Moore County.  The longleaf pine forest originally stretched from southeastern Virginia to Florida and then westward to Texas.  Once covering 92 million acres\, now only about 3% of the original forest remains.  You will get a sense of what the once magnificent forest looked like as we discuss the reasons for its decline.  After a picnic lunch at the Weymouth Woods Tract\, we will visit the virgin longleaf pine in the Boyd Tract\, including the oldest longleaf pine known. \nPlease note: You will be required to enter the following information for each registrant before you can complete your registration: emergency contact\, physician contact and health information (allergies\, conditions\, medications relevant to this field experience). Take a moment to gather this information before beginning your registration. \nREGISTER FOR THIS TRIP \nIf the trip is full\, please email Missy Chernick to be added to the waitlist. \nRegistration deadline:  Monday\, September 11 at 9:00 AM \nFor additional information about this trip and other Lifelong Hikes & Adventures\, contact Jerry Reynolds at 919.707.9884.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: Tracking the Blue Land Crab With Community Science
DESCRIPTION:An Emerging Situation — Tracking the Blue Land Crab and Other Aquatic Nuisance Species Through the Power of Community Science\nDr. Bronwyn W. Williams\, Research Curator\, Non-Molluscan Invertebrates\, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences \nIn July 2023\, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission received a report of a blue land crab on Emerald Isle. While this was the first report of this species in North Carolina\, it has not been the last; community engagement will continue to be invaluable in determining its distribution\, spread\, and behavior. Join us to learn about blue land crabs\, the humorous stories behind early reports in South Carolina and North Carolina\, and how YOU can help with this unique community science endeavor! \nJoin us on YouTube!\n\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
