SUMMARY:Museum Movie Night: Soylent Green
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm–7pm: Food\, live music and science stations.\n7pm: Movie begins in the WRAL 3D Theater\, followed by commentary. \nSoylent Green (1973)\nNew York City\, 2022. Overpopulated\, polluted\, starving. With 40 million mouths to feed\, how can humanity survive? The Soylent Corporation has the answer – and it’s to die for! \nOn Friday\, May 20\, grab a bite during Museum Movie Night and discover the secret behind the fictional food of the future\, Soylent Green! Enjoy pre-show science tables\, soy-like green-themed treats\, and learn about the chemistry\, engineering and latest research on taste\, nutrition and edibility! After the movie\, test your film knowledge with trivia hosted by A/V Geeks and learn snack facts with our expert speaker\, Dr. Gabriel Keith Harris\, Associate Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator of Food Science at NC State University. It will be an exciting night with lots of food for thought! \nBUY TICKETS! \nCheck out the upcoming movies and learn more about Museum Movie Night: Where Science meets the Cinema. \n\nSOYLENT GREEN (1973) Rated PG\nIn a more dystopian version of 2022\, climate catastrophe and human overpopulation has caused extreme shortages of food\, water and housing. Soylent Corporation\, the largest producer of the world’s rations\, is forced to take drastic measures to feed the hungry\, homeless masses but when one of the board members is shockingly murdered\, the company’s methods come into question by NYPD detective Frank Thorn (Charlton Heston) and his friend\, former professor Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson). Despite being ordered to close the case\, they are determined to get to the truth: what is Soylent Green? \nOur Expert\n\nDr. Keith Harris is a Professor of Food Science at NC State University and the proud Dad of three amazing teens. When he is not busy making Dad jokes or spontaneously breaking into song (despite limited singing talent)\, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in food chemistry\, food analysis and food toxicology. He is obsessed with coffee\, so his research focuses on (wait for it) coffee. Most recently he’s been working on how to make a better\, faster\, more flavorful cold brew and on how coffee affects blood sugar and exercise performance. His wife\, also a food scientist\, makes the best Mexican food in the known universe\, which is why Keith is often seen hiking away calories in Umstead with the best dog in the known universe\, Rumba.\n\n\n\nSCIENCE STATIONS (5:30–7PM)\nWhat We Do with Bodies Instead of Eating Them\nHistoric Oakwood Cemetery\nRaleigh’s Oakwood Historic Cemetery is here to inspire candid conversation on how our society manages death. Learn about the science\, history and business behind modern mortuary practices from real live local death experts! \nExploring Alternative Protein Sources (Give Soy a Try!)\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nMeat is but one of many sources of dietary protein. Explore\, taste-test and learn to prepare a variety of alternative proteins — including soy and insects — that are much more sustainable (and tastier) than people. \nNature of Dye\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nExplore how chemicals interact to create the colors in our food\, fabric\, and more! Learn about the natural and synthetic sources of dye and experiment with mixing colors! \nSoylent Green Tasting Party\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nOK\, it’s not really Soylent Green (we’d get in many layers of trouble).  Have a little snack and pretend it’s 2022 and the world is overpopulated and food is scarce…. \n\nMUSIC (5:30–7PM)\nSusan Riggs\n\nSinger/songwriter Susan Riggs has always loved playing and singing from the time she began at age 3. She enjoys playing both melodic peaceful songs and upbeat bouncy songs. She began taking lessons at the age of 5\, but stopped the lessons until she decided to go to UNCG. In 1994 she received a BM from UNCG in piano performance and a voice minor. She has been teaching piano and voice for over 32 years. She is also a church pianist at Unity Church of Raleigh. She has a large internet following on YouTube and Facebook\, with many songs done with videos. She is very passionate about the music she sings and plays\, and brings a lot of energy to her music. She is married to Kevin Riggs. She is an avid beekeeper and gardener as well as a student of humanity.\n\n\n\nFOOD & DRINK\nDetails coming soon!
