SUMMARY:Blue Whales Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Hear what the latest research tells us about WHALES — from amazing new discoveries to ongoing conservation efforts to revealing prehistoric origins — with some of the nation’s top whale scientists in this four-part lecture series. \nTales of Whales: Why Conservation Matters\nHow do we save the whales? Join world-renowned conservation biologist and Duke University professor Dr. Andy Read as he takes us on a journey through time and space to explore this critical question. Drawing from a lifetime of work with some of the world’s most critically endangered whale species\, Read will share stories of both the triumphs and challenges of whale conservation. Discover the science and strategies behind saving these magnificent creatures. \nEnjoy the lecture (7–8pm) and an evening viewing of the “Blue Whales” special exhibition (open 5–7pm). \nTickets: Series $45\, $15 Members; Lecture $15\, $5 Members. \nBuy Tickets \n\n \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Andrew Read is the Stephen A. Toth Professor of Marine Biology and in the Nicholas School for the Environment at Duke University.  He is also the Director of the Duke Marine Lab.  He studies the conservation biology of long-lived marine vertebrates\, particularly marine mammals\, seabirds and sea turtles. His work\, and that of his students\, documents the effects of human activities on populations of these species. Their work involves field work\, experimentation and modeling. He is particularly interested in the development and application of new conservation tools. \n\nUpcoming Lecture\nOct. 9: Where Did Whales Come From?\nDr. Mark Uhen\, George Mason University \n\n
