SUMMARY:Wild Green Hike
DESCRIPTION:The City Nature Challenge is an international event focused on documenting biodiversity.  Join us for a plant themed walk around Prairie Ridge.  We’ll show off some of our site’s amazing plants as we attempt to find and photograph as many species as possible!  We’ll also teach you how to use iNaturalist so your photos will become a part of the City Nature Challenge event. \nPlease come dressed for the weather as we will be outside walking on uneven\, often sunny trails the entire length of the program.  Bring a filled water bottle and a camera (phone\, point and shoot\, or adjustable cameras are all welcome!).  If possible\, download the iNaturalist app and create an account prior to the start of the program. \nThis program is best for ages 10+.  Meet your leader in the Outdoor Classroom at the start of the program\, a 3-5 minute walk down the gravel path from the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Geology Research Day
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Earth’s seafloor can record the presence of glaciers that existed over 20\,000 years ago? Or that North Carolina bald cypress trees can tell us about past environmental conditions? Join us for Geology Research Day!  This event will highlight active research projects happening across North Carolina. Geologists from the Museum and beyond are excited to share their gems of wisdom about the fascinating world of geology. \nActivities\nGeologic Mapping\nNorth Carolina Geological Survey\nIt takes a team to produce geologic maps – field geologists\, GIS experts\, and cartographers. Learn from North Carolina Geological Survey team members how geologic maps are produced\, what they look like\, and how we use them. \nGroundwater Monitoring in North Carolina\nNC Division of Water Resources\nThe NC Division of Water Resources’ Groundwater Resources Branch maintains and monitors a statewide network of approximately 700 monitoring wells. Data from this network is shared with researchers and policy makers to protect and preserve North Carolina’s groundwater. This booth will highlight aspects of groundwater data collection and demonstrate a common groundwater sample collection method. \nMuseum Geology Collections\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nThe Museum’s Geology Collection includes over 10\,000 rock\, mineral\, and gem specimens. This booth will highlight some of our off-exhibit specimens and will include native NC minerals and faceted gem stones. \nStudent Research Highlights\nUNC-Wilmington\nThis booth will highlight a variety of Geology graduate student research projects including topics such as sediment transport\, glacial geology\, and groundwater salinization. This booth will also include hands on activities. \n  \nPresentations: SECU Daily Planet Theater\, Floors 1-3\n\n11:00 am\nHow New Earth Is Made\nDr. Arianna Soldati\, NC State University\nCome learn about how volcanoes create new land every day! With a focus on the most recent eruptions in Iceland\, we will explore the most dynamic geologic features of our living planet.\nAges 12 and older.\n  \n\n\n12:00 pm\nGet a Bigger Hammer: Research in the Geology Unit \nDr. Chris Tacker\, NC Museum of Natural Sciences\nGeoscience research requires hammers\, some bigger than others. Dr. Tacker will discuss the “bigger hammers” used to turn minerals into information. We’ll use examples of recent research into volcanic minerals\, pyrite “disease” and North Carolina diamonds.\nAges 8 and older.

SUMMARY:Live Animal Feeding: Lobster
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live feeding of the Maine lobster in the Arthropod Zoo and meet Living Collections staff. This clawed crustacean is formidable and feisty with a tough exoskeleton to help it survive. Many crustaceans incorporate minerals like lime into their exoskeleton\, which thickens and strengthens it. \nThis walk-up program is offered: \n\nTuesday and Saturday — 1:30pm\n\nLocation: Nature Exploration Center\, 4th floor\, Arthropod Zoo. \nNo registration required.
