SUMMARY:Museum Movie Night: Spaceballs (1987)
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm–7pm: Live music and science stations.\n7pm: Movie begins in the WRAL 3D Theater\, followed by commentary and movie trivia. \nSpaceballs (1987)\n“May the Farce be with you.” \nCome on an outrageous journey in space with our March 7th installment of Museum Movie Night.  After wasting the fresh air on the distant planet Spaceball\, corrupt President Skroob orders the arch-villain henchman Dark Helmet to kidnap Princess Vespa to force King Roland to provide them with the code to Druidia’s atmosphere. Under those circumstances\, the seasoned mercenary Lone Starr and his devoted half-human\, half-canine sidekick Barf try to save the princess. In the meantime\, the ruthless loan shark Pizza the Hutt is after them. But only he who can harness The Schwartz\, a mystical cosmic force\, will save the day.  In addition to science activities and stations before the movie\, we’ll host an expert and movie trivia (with prizes) following the screening. Don’t miss it! \nThis movie is rated PG. \nBUY TICKETS \nCheck out the upcoming movies and learn more about Museum Movie Night: Where Science meets the Cinema. \n\nSpaceballs- 1987 (PG)\n \n\n \n\n \n\nIn a distant galaxy\, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply\, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called “”Perri-Air.”” In desperation\, Spaceball’s leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man\, half-dog partner\, Barf (John Candy). \nOUR SPEAKER\n\n\nDr. Patrick Treuthardt\nPatrick is the Assistant Head of the Astronomy & Astrophysics Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. His work deals with understanding the evolution of nearby galaxies by studying their different forms and structures. \n\n\nSCIENCE STATIONS (5:30–7PM)\nComb the Desert\nDe-stress at the end of the week as you comb our table-top desert scene. Maybe you’ll have more luck than the Spaceballs! \nSuck\, Suck\, Suck!\nVacuums! \nStunt Doubles \nMimics of plants and animals can be found throughout the natural world. Try to separate the mimic from the original. \nYogurt says “May the Ferment Force Be with You.”\nFoods that are fermented are “transformed” by microbes such as bacteria and yeast. These foods start off fresh and through fermentation end up being preserved as well as their flavor and texture changed.  Brevibacterium is the bacterium in smelly washed rind cheese that is also the odor from what body part? (Hint: humans walk upright on these.)  Try your nose at smelling the odors in disguise and select what fermented products\, like yogurt\, you think they are from. \nMagnetic Schwartz\nObserve the power of the Schwartz! \nLonestar’s Birthright Pendant\nMake your own birthright pendant in an “alien” language! \nThe Universe’s Grossest Aliens\nDo you make a face every time Pizza the Hut comes on screen? Compare him to other grotesque creations and then vote for the worst! You can also test your movie knowledge to see if you can ID other famous faces. \nIt’s Not a Mog…\nBarf is a Mog…a hybrid half man\, half dog.  We don’t have a mog but you can come meet some of the Museum’s hybrid animals! \n\nMUSIC (5:30–7PM)\nSusan Riggs\nSinger/songwriter Susan Riggs has always loved playing and singing from the time she began at age 3. She enjoys playing both melodic peaceful songs and upbeat bouncy songs. She began taking lessons at the age of 5\, but stopped the lessons until she decided to go to UNCG. In 1994 she received a BM from UNCG in piano performance and a voice minor. She has been teaching piano and voice for over 32 years. She is also a church pianist at Unity Church of Raleigh. She has a large internet following on YouTube and Facebook\, with many songs done with videos. She is very passionate about the music she sings and plays\, and brings a lot of energy to her music. She is married to Kevin Riggs. She is an avid beekeeper and gardener as well as a student of humanity. \n\nFood and Drinks (5:30-7pm)\nAvailable for purchase: \nHot Dogs \nChicken Salad Wrap \nBuffalo Chicken Wrap \nVegan Curry Wrap \nChips \nCookies \nCake Pops \nRice Krispy \nDrinks \nPopcorn

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: Clearing the Air: Addressing Misunderstandings about Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is a global issue that has impacted North Carolina and other parts of the world. With many sources of information comes many misconceptions. These impact our understanding and ability to adapt and mitigate climate issues. Will planting trees solve the problem? If it is really cold\, is that climate change? Join us as we discuss climate misconceptions and why our understanding of climate issues can be impacted both in and out of the classroom. \nAbout our speaker \nAlex Trifaro is a science educator with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and enjoys sharing science content with the public. Her Masters work looked at how climate change information is communicated\, especially in school settings. \nRecommended for ages 11–17. YouTube livestream also available. \n\nTeen Science Cafés bring teens together in an informal setting to learn about science and technology on the first Friday of each month during the school year. Each café includes a scientist presentation\, an interactive activity relating to the discussion\, a Q&A session\, and time to socialize with other teens who enjoy science.
