SUMMARY:Lifelong Longleaf Hike: Holly Shelter
DESCRIPTION:Our spring hikes will be in the Land of the Longleaf Pine in partnership with the North Carolina Botanical Garden’s Saving Our Savannas program series.  The Botanical Garden\, with partner organizations\, has developed an exciting schedule of hikes\, lectures\, and workshops covering the history\, ecology\, and culture of longleaf pine communities.  Learn more about this exciting program series. \nThe longleaf pine story continues with our exploration of Holly Shelter Game Land in Pender County.  Here we will explore the longleaf pine savannas and associated pocosins rich in carnivorous plants and colorful orchids. Holly Shelter\, North Carolina’s first state game land\, is managing longleaf pine with an aggressive burn regime and restoring longleaf pine to areas that had been converted to loblolly pine plantations when under private ownership. \nPlease note: You will be required to enter the following information for each registrant before you can complete your registration: emergency contact\, physician contact and health information (allergies\, conditions\, medications relevant to this field experience). Take a moment to gather this information before beginning your registration. \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS TRIP IS FULL \nIf the trip is full\, please email Missy Chernick to be added to the waitlist. \nRegistration deadline: Monday\, May 6 @ 7:00 AM \nFor additional information about this trip and other Lifelong Hikes & Adventures\, contact Jerry Reynolds at 919.707.9884.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: Our Ancient Lakes: A Natural History
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeffrey McKinnon\, Professor\, Department of Biology\, East Carolina University \nMost lakes are less than 15\,000 years old and short-lived\, but there is a much smaller number of ancient lakes\, tectonic in origin and often millions of years old\, that are scattered across every continent but Antarctica. Examples include Baikal\, Tanganyika\, Victoria\, Titicaca\, and Biwa. Often these lakes are filled with a diversity of fish\, crustaceans\, snails and other creatures found nowhere else in the world. Join Jeffrey McKinnon to learn more about the remarkable living diversity of these aquatic bodies and the surprising\, often controversial\, findings about the formation and persistence of the species living in them. \nJoin us on YouTube!\n\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
