SUMMARY:Intro to Bird Identification (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a massive international citizen science event where people count and report the birds they see over a four-day period in February. Join us to learn the basics of bird identification (ID) in this virtual program so you can participate in the GBBC too! We’ll cover the four keys to bird ID\, how to make a good observation\, identification resources and how to collect and submit your data to eBird for the GBBC. This program is perfect for beginning birders ages 10+! \nThis virtual program requires pre-registration. Register here!

SUMMARY:Science Cafe: A Tiger Story
DESCRIPTION:Loki\, an orphaned tiger\, was hand-reared. Photos: Dr. Jenny Campbell \n\nLoki was an orphaned tiger that Dr. Jenny Campbell hand-reared when she was much younger. This experience set in motion a lifelong fascination with tigers that took her places she did not expect. Tigers are among the most iconic\, most “popular” animals in the world\, one of the first we teach our children about\, an apex predator we love perhaps too much. Join us for a tiger story!\nTonight’s Expert\nDr. Jenny Campbell is a Teaching Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Zoology Program at NC State University (NCSU).  Prior to coming to NC State\, she worked in zoos and conducted wildlife conservation research throughout the U.S. and internationally. Her main research and teaching interest is the study of the human-animal relationship\, and she works with students to provide them with meaningful research and educational experiences in this field. She hopes to prepare students for the 21st century and empower them to understand the challenges their non-human neighbors — both wild and domesticated — face.\n\n\nGrab a bite from the Daily Planet Cafe and join host Chris Smith and special guests for our monthly Science Cafe. On the third Thursday of every month at 7pm\, gather with other curious minds at this after-hours event for an informal presentation and conversation about current science topics with guest experts. The Daily Planet Cafe is open 5–8pm with a full menu during the Science Cafe.
