SUMMARY:Lifelong Adventure: Alligator River/Outer Banks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekend exploration of Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges in eastern North Carolina.  We will ride through the refuges on the museum bus with frequent stops to look for birds and other wildlife.  Some stops will include short to moderate walks along trails.  Black bears are commonly spotted in this area.  We have a chance to see the critically endangered Red Wolf and learn about efforts to save this species from extinction.  We will also explore the maritime forest of Nags Head Woods and the huge sand dune of Jockey’s Ridge State Park\, along with other natural areas as time permits. \nPlease note: You will be required to enter the following information for each registrant before you can complete your registration: emergency contact\, physician contact and health information (allergies\, conditions\, medications relevant to this field experience). Take a moment to gather this information before beginning your registration. \nREGISTRATION IS FULL FOR THIS TRIP \nIf the trip is full\, please email Missy Chernick to be added to the waitlist. \nRegistration deadline:  Sunday\, October 29 at 10:00 AM \nFor additional information about this trip and other Lifelong Hikes & Adventures\, contact Jerry Reynolds at 919.707.9884.

SUMMARY:Art of Science: Clouds and Cyanotypes
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Science series is for adults who like to blend science and art. Each program will include hands-on experience with a citizen science project paired with an associated art project. Participants will take home their project and tools so they can make additional projects on their own. \nIn this program\, we will explore cloud types before we make cyanotypes (sun prints)! Instructions for collecting and submitting cloud data and making your own cyanotypes will be provided during the program — no experience required. Your program fee covers all the supplies you’ll need to make paper and one fabric cyanotype (a tote bag) as well as chemicals to take home so you can make more on your own. \nPre-registration is required for this in-person program for adults\, and there is a fee to attend ($18 members; $20 non-members). \nRegister online here\nThis program is intended for adults and will be conducted entirely outdoors\, at least partly in a covered space. Please come prepared for a short walk over uneven terrain by wearing sturdy closed-toed shoes and dressing for the weather. Long pants\, a wide-brimmed hat\, and sunscreen are recommended for our citizen science data collecting time. We will be in a covered\, shaded space for the art part of the program and working with chemicals that can stain fabrics\, so please plan your attire appropriately. Questions? Contact Chris Goforth.
