SUMMARY:Science Detectives: Fire Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Join us for classes designed especially for homeschool and track-out students. These 60-minute classes allow us to delve deeper into topics and incorporate additional learning experiences. \nFire: Is it deeply destructive\, or ecologically necessary … or is it both? Explore the concepts of fire ecology\, ecosystem succession and the physics of fire itself. Discover how scientists right now are tackling the global problem of increasingly intense wildfires\, then get hands-on with prescribed burn equipment and drone video footage to learn how natural resource professionals safely burn the land\, and why it’s so important to do so. \nParticipants must be 11 years of age or older for this program. \nREGISTRATION IS CLOSED FOR THIS PROGRAM\nRegistration ends 48 hours prior to program start time. \nFor more information contact Missy Chernick.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: Keep Them Wild: BearWise® and Black Bears in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Hobbs\, Special Projects Biologist\, NC Wildlife Resources Commission \nScience-based management and enlightened conservation efforts have aided black bears in making a dramatic comeback across their historic ranges. Ashley Hobbs\, a bear biologist with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission\, will discuss the natural history of black bears in western North Carolina and how you can use that information to safely coexist with these North Carolina treasures. Ashley will also tell us about the BearWise® initiative\, which provides ways to prevent conflicts\, provides resources to resolve problems and encourages community initiatives to keep bears wild. \nJoin us on YouTube!\n\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
