SUMMARY:Museum Movie Night: Men in Black
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm–7pm: Food\, live music and science stations.\n7pm: Movie begins in the WRAL 3D Theater\, followed by commentary and movie trivia. \nMen in Black (1997)\n“Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago\, everybody knew the Earth was flat\, and fifteen minutes ago\, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.” \nContemplate whether we are alone in the Universe with our July 28 installment of Museum Movie Night. They are the best-kept secret in the universe. Working for a highly funded yet unofficial government agency\, Kay and Jay are the Men in Black\, providers of immigration services and regulators of all things alien on Earth. When an assassination plot is uncovered\, the MIB go on the hunt for the intergalactic terrorist at the center of the scheme. In addition to science activities and stations before the movie\, we’ll host an expert and movie trivia (with prizes) following the screening. Don’t miss it! \nThis movie is rated PG-13. \nSome scenes have a strobing effect that may affect photosensitive viewers. \nBUY TICKETS \nCheck out the upcoming movies and learn more about Museum Movie Night: Where Science Meets the Cinema. \n\nMen in Black (PG-13)\n \n\nMen in Black follows the exploits of agents Kay (Jones) and Jay (Smith)\, members of a top-secret organization established to monitor alien activity on Earth. The two MIB find themselves in the middle of the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D’Onofrio) who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies. \nOUR SPEAKER\n \nDr. Rachel Smith is Head of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Lab and Curator of Meteorites at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. She is jointly appointed as Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University\, and Adjunct Professor at UNC Chapel Hill. Rachel’s research involves observing forming stars across the Galaxy to better understand the chemical pathways involved in the evolution of planets\, and in the formation of carbon-based molecules needed for life. Rachel has utilized several large observatories for her work\, and is currently using NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility on Maunakea in Hawaii for observations of protoplanetary systems. Rachel has had a long-time interest in the search for life beyond our planet\, and how life began and evolved on Earth. \n\n\n\nSCIENCE STATIONS (5:30–7PM)\nCockroaches!\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nEdgar the Bug advocates for not stepping on cockroaches — and we do too! Come touch a Madagascar hissing cockroach and get to know these awesome arthropods. \nMen in Black Agent Testing\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nTest your aptitude for being a MIB operative with a floating ball shooting game\, Alien Operation and Movie Alien quizzes. \nCows and UFOs\nNC Museum of Natural Sciences\nCows have fascinating and complex digestive systems. No artistic talent required for results as beautiful as the comets in our night sky. \n\nMUSIC (5:30–7PM)\n \nSinger/songwriter William Woltz is a North Carolina native who covers a lot of musical territory. He grew up loving both the Beatles and Buck Owens while studying jazz and classical guitar.
