SUMMARY:Prairie Ridge Summer Nature Adventures for Middle Schoolers (grades 6-8)
DESCRIPTION:Put on your field scientist hats and let’s go! Whether looking for salamanders in our stream\, catching dragonflies by the pond\, or helping check nest boxes\, each day we’ll dive into the different habitats of Prairie Ridge and the organisms that live in these spaces through hands-on\, outdoor experiences. Each day will be unique\, as we modify programming to reflect what’s going on in nature! Will we be searching for ladybugs? Helping collect data on our purple martin colony? Getting creative with nature art? Join us and find out! \nSummer Nature Adventures for Middle Schoolers is a three-day\, partial-day “mini-camp” for students entering grades 6 through 8 in Fall 2023. \nSummer Nature Adventures Schedule \nMonday\, June 19 – 8:30am-12:30pm\nWednesday\, June 21 – 8:30am-12:30pm\nFriday\, June 23 – 8:30am-12:30pm \nParticipants should expect to be entirely outdoors\, bring a packed snack and lunch\, and be ready to have fun outside! \nThis program requires registration and costs $100 for Friends of the Museum Members\, and $115 for non-members. \nPreregister here.  \nPlease note that completion of this form does not guarantee your child’s spot in this program\, as participants will be enrolled on a first-come\, first-serve basis until all spots have been filled. After completion of the form\, you will receive communications from staff regarding your child’s placement.

We’ll be focusing on the work of two African-American researchers – Dr. Patricia Bath\, inventor of the laser surgical procedure for cataracts\, and Dr. Mandë Holford\, who researches snail venoms and pain medications to cross the blood-brain barrier. We’ll get the conversation going with science demos and quick bites of information\, then pose trivia and critical thinking questions for you to answer. Or bring questions of your own. \nThis program is designed to help young guests tap their dreams\, flex their critical and creative thinking skills\, and develop their own voice. \nScience Conversations are offered in an open-house format. Drop in to chat for as long or as short a time as you wish during the program period.
