SUMMARY:Prairie Ridge Summer Nature Adventures for High Schoolers (grades 9-12)
DESCRIPTION:Put on your field scientist hats and let’s go! Whether documenting salamanders in our stream\, identifying dragonflies by the pond or checking nest boxes\, each day we’ll dive into the different habitats of Prairie Ridge and learn about the organisms that live in these spaces through hands-on\, outdoor experiences. Each day’s offerings will be unique\, as we modify programming to reflect what’s going on in nature! Will we be searching for ladybugs? Helping collect data on our purple martin colony? Getting creative with nature art? Join us and find out! \nSummer Nature Adventures for High Schoolers is a three-day\, partial-day “mini-camp” for students entering grades 9–12 in fall 2023. \nSummer Nature Adventures Schedule \n\nMonday\, June 12:  8:30am–12:30pm\nWednesday\, June 14:  8:30am–12:30pm\nFriday\, June 16:  8:30am–12:30pm\n\nParticipants should expect to be entirely outdoors\, bring a packed snack and lunch\, and be ready to learn and have fun outside! \nThis program requires registration and costs $100 for Friends of the Museum Members\, and $115 for non-members. \nPreregister here \nPlease note that completion of this form does not guarantee your child’s spot in this program\, as participants will be enrolled on a first-come\, first-serve basis until all spots have been filled. After completion of the form\, you will receive communications from staff regarding your child’s placement.

DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth Time Machines\, Nature Connections\, and the Technoscience of Ruth E. Carter’s Designs\nGrab a bite from the Daily Planet Cafe and join host Chris Smith and special guests for the Science Cafe. On the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7pm\, gather with other curious minds at this after-hours event for an informal presentation and conversation about current science topics with guest experts. \nJoin in-person or watch live on YouTube. \nTonight’s Presentation \n\nExplore the interconnectedness of freedom\, science\, nature\, and the arts through the lens of Afrofuturism as the Science Café celebrates Juneteenth with scientist and poet Darrell Stover\, in collaboration with the NC Museum of Art. \nAfrofuturism is an interdisciplinary movement and aesthetic that re-imagines and empowers the Black experience across the globe often through themes of science\, sci-fi\, and technology. \nRuth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design\, on view now through August 6\, 2023\, at the NC Museum of Art\, highlights the work of the Academy Award-winning designer for films such as “Amistad\,” “Selma\,” and “Black Panther.” Carter’s attention to race\, history\, and politics\, and inspiration from Africa’s natural and cultural diversity — from the use of indigo dyes to the “sacred geometry” of the Black Panther suit — provides vibrant examples of how Afrofuturism weaves together science\, nature\, history\, and culture. \nThe Daily Planet Cafe is open 5–8pm with a full menu during the Science Cafe. \nTonight’s Expert \nDarrell Stover is a cultural historian\, science communicator and performance poet with the DNA of a trickster. Currently\, Darrell is the Head of the Science Museums Grant Program at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. He also teaches courses at NC State University on  Afrofuturism and Science\, Technology and Society at NC State University. \nDarrell served as program director at both the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham\, NC and the North Carolina Humanities Council. He researched and produced “Run on Water\,” a multimedia history project that examined the Black experience during the Civil War in coastal North Carolina and captures that wonderous moment of transition from enslavement to emancipation.
