SUMMARY:Professional Previews: Lauren Pharr & Murry Burgess
DESCRIPTION:(From left to right) Murry Burgess (CEO)\, Lauren D. Pharr (CEO)\, and Kayla Stukes (Intern) pose for a group photo wearing Field Inclusive’s official shirts. Photo: Murry Burgess.\n \nJoin us to learn more about how birding can be both a hobby and a career. During this program\, we will meet Murry Burgess and Lauren Pharr! \nMurry Burgess is an Associate Wildlife Biologist®\, Urban Ecologist\, and ornithologist who studies the effects of sensory pollutants on songbird health and development. She currently conducts a field experiment testing the impacts of light pollution on barn swallow chicks. In addition to her research\, Murry is an environmental educator and children’s author. Social media: @murryloub \nLauren D. Pharr is an avian ecologist who studies the impacts of climate change on avian behavioral responses. She is currently a PhD student at North Carolina State University pursuing her degree in fisheries\, wildlife\, and conservation biology & researching brood reduction in the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. She is an award-winning science communicator\, a member of the Leadership in Public Science Cluster\, and holds editorial roles at both North Carolina Sea Grant and The Wildlife Society. Social media: @ldpharr on Instagram & Twitter \nTogether\, the two founded Field Inclusive (FI)\, a new nonprofit which seeks to amplify and support marginalized and historically excluded individuals who professionally work outdoors in any natural resources field. With support from individual donors and corporate sponsors\, FI seeks to offer tangible and actionable improvements in field research issues related to justice\, equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (JEDI). In line with the goals of this organization\, FI also seeks to provide research scholarships and other financial assistance for marginalized and historically excluded field researchers. Join us to learn more about Field Inclusive and the path these co-founders took to get here!\nwww.fieldinclusive.org | @fieldinclusive on Facebook\, Instagram & Twitter \nREGISTER NOW!\n\nProfessional Previews will take place on Zoom. Programs are recorded and registrants can access previous topics. \nWe recommend this program for middle school and up\, but all ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: Humans and Stream Invertebrates
DESCRIPTION:Connections in Form\, Function and Adaptations\nIf you open any biology textbook\, one of the first concepts that you will encounter is the connection between form and function. Form (or structure) and function (or physiology) are linked in all life forms. Organisms are adapted to their environments in numerous ways\, including through their structure and physiology. This presentation will explore a few of the relationships among form\, function and adaptation in both humans and stream invertebrates. \nAbout our speaker\nDr. Karen Kandl is a biology professor at Western Carolina University. Her teaching interests include anatomy and physiology\, ecology and evolution. She also hosts a “creek club” at an area elementary school that allows students to explore aquatic macroinvertebrates and learn about water quality. \nRegister here\nTeen Science Cafe homepage
