SUMMARY:Lifelong Adventure: Winter Birds
DESCRIPTION:Lake Mattamuskeet and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuges host one of the largest concentrations of winter birds along the East Coast. Learn how to identify waterfowl\, raptors and other bird species. Short hikes and easy viewing from the Museum bus make this an ideal trip for both novice and seasoned birders. \nPlease note: You will be required to enter the following information for each registrant before you can complete your registration: emergency contact\, physician contact and health information (allergies\, conditions\, medications relevant to this field experience). Take a moment to gather this information before beginning your registration. \nIf selecting double occupancy\, please include the name of second participant; otherwise\, you will be paired with a randomly selected participant of the same gender. \nREGISTRATION IS FULL FOR THIS TRIP \nRegistration ends Sunday\, November 13. \nFor additional information about this trip and other Lifelong Hikes Adventures\, contact Jerry Reynolds at 919.707.9884.

SUMMARY:Professional Previews: Haviv Avrahami
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about the ins and outs of a career in the STEAM field. During this program\, we will meet Haviv Avrahami\, an NCMNS Paleontologist and PhD Candidate at NC State. \nHaviv is a PhD candidate at NC State University. He has a broad interest in the anatomy\, paleobiology\, ontogeny and phylogeny of dinosaurs. He is researching a new species of small-bodied plant-eating dinosaur from the middle Cretaceous of Utah and is focusing on their osteology\, histology and behavior. Haviv has nearly a decade of field experience with fossil excavation\, prospecting and team leadership\, and has worked extensively in Montana\, Utah\, New Mexico\, Arizona and North Carolina. His undergraduate and master’s research was focused on documenting the biodiversity of a Cretaceous microvertebrate fossil assemblage and quantifying shape variation among archosaurian teeth using 2D and 3D geometric morphometrics. \nHe is passionate about citizen science\, mentorship\, fieldwork and working in teams. As a career professional with a non-traditional background\, he enjoys engaging in opportunities to share paleontology with the public\, specifically middle-school and high-school students from disenfranchised and underprivileged backgrounds. He hopes to present science as a tangible\, realistic and attainable career path for students with unconventional educational backgrounds\, especially those facing adversity. \nREGISTER NOW! \n\nProfessional Previews will take place on Zoom. Programs are recorded and registrants can access previous topics.\nWe recommend this program for middle school and up\, but all ages are welcome. Parents and teachers are invited to participate with their children or students.

SUMMARY:Museum Movie Night: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm–7pm: Food\, live music and science stations.\n7pm: Movie begins in the WRAL 3D Theater\, followed by commentary. \nSTAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home\n“Space … the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise\, its continuing mission to explore strange new worlds\, to seek out new life and new civilizations\, to boldly go where no one has gone before” … until now. \nCome aboard the Enterprise for our December 2 installment of Museum Movie Night. Kirk and the rest of the original Star Trek crew find that a catastrophe in their time can only be averted by a journey into Earth’s past. They soon find that 1980s San Francisco is more alien than anything they’ve encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy! We’ll host an expert to help us separate the science from the fiction following the screening. Don’t miss it! \nBUY TICKETS \nCheck out the upcoming movies and learn more about Museum Movie Night: Where Science meets the Cinema. \n\nSTAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home (1986) PG\nIt’s the 23rd century\, and a mysterious alien probe is threatening Earth by evaporating the oceans and destroying the atmosphere. In a frantic attempt to save mankind\, Admiral Kirk and his crew time travel back to 1986 San Francisco where they find a world of punk\, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything they’ve ever encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy. Their quest: to find a pair of humpback whales that they hope can talk back to the probe. \nOur Speaker\n\nDr. Mohamed Noor is a professor of biology and currently serves as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Duke University. He is also a contracted science consultant for the Star Trek universe\, with current credits in seasons 3–4 of “Star Trek: Discovery\,” and more to come. He merges his passion for genetics and evolution with science-fiction by teaching biology concepts using depictions from Star Trek in the classroom\, in online videos and in presentations at conventions. Additionally\, Dr. Noor published a book via Princeton University Press that uses examples from Star Trek to teach real-world principles in genetics and evolution\, called “Live Long and Evolve: What Star Trek Can Teach Us About Evolution\, Genetics\, and Life on Other Worlds.”  Dr. Noor will do a book signing after the movie and books will be available for purchase.\nSCIENCE STATIONS (5:30–7PM)\nImagining Life\n“Exploring the Universe: Imagining Life” is a hands-on activity in which guests imagine and draw an extreme environment beyond Earth\, then invent a living thing that could thrive in it. Guests learn that NASA scientists study extremophiles on Earth to imagine the variety of life that might exist elsewhere\, and make predictions about where to look for it. \nStar Trek Matching Game\nMuseum guests will test their knowledge by matching the crew with their original statements\, uniforms and genetic identity. \nShrinky Dink Ornaments\nColor a holiday Star Trek ornament and watch it shrink before your eyes! \nThe Wonder of Whales\nCan you imagine swimming with a whale? Experience the next best thing as you stand beneath five enormous whale skeletons. Learn about their histories\, what life is like for them in our oceans and even how dogs are helping to protect them. \n\nMUSIC (5:30–7PM)\n\n\nWilliam Woltz (voice\, guitar\, mandolin) is a North Carolina native who’s all over the map musically. He grew up loving both the Beatles and Buck Owens\, and has studied jazz and classical guitar. Over the last four decades he has played a lot of blues\, beach music and singer/songwriter material as well as playing in the pit orchestra for community theater productions. Will performs with Sara Monroe and Jim Loos in the trio Loos Change\, based in Raleigh\, and violinist and songwriter Angela DiPaolo. \n\n\nFOOD & DRINK\nEnjoy a Pulled Pork Sandwich with Slaw\, a Greek Salad\, hot dogs\, giant cookies (chocolate chip\, sugar and oatmeal)\, chips and rice krispie treats.  Sodas will also be available. \n

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: Ecological Restoration
DESCRIPTION:The practice of ecological restoration involves taking inspiration from healthy ecosystems and using that to assist in the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded\, damaged or destroyed. It is a practice that requires the expertise of many STEM fields including engineering\, plant biology\, ecology\, wetland science\, soil science\, entomology\, wildlife biology and more. Angela Allen\, a water resources engineer\, explores the goals of this multidisciplinary field and how we can look beyond what we see in a damaged landscape to what it could be\, and what steps we need to take to get it there. \nREGISTER HERE\nTeen Science Cafe homepage
