SUMMARY:Science Detectives: Mysteries of the Longleaf Pine Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for classes designed especially for homeschool and track-out students. These 60-minute classes allow us to delve deeper into topics and incorporate additional learning experiences. \nThe landscape of the South would have looked much different if you visited in early settlement times. Forests would have seemed to go on forever. One type of ecosystem you would have encountered was the Longleaf Pine Savannah. With vast\, open understories and an amazing diversity of plants and animals\, this ecosystem is a wonder to behold. Longleaf Pine forests now occupy only 3 percent of their original range\, and require careful management\, including frequent fire. In this class\, we will talk about human impacts on these forests and uncover some of the amazing adaptations of plants and animals that are unique to this habitat. \nParticipants must be 8 to 10 years old for this program. \nREGISTER NOW!\nRegistration ends 48 hours prior to program start time. \nFor more information contact Missy Chernick.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: How Do Environmental Fungi Threaten Human Health?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. José Vargas-Muñiz.\n\nDr. José Vargas-Muñiz\, Assistant Professor of Microbiology\, Southern Illinois University \nFungi are essential for a healthy ecosystem. They play vital roles in the nutrient cycle due to their ability to decompose plant matter. However\, a few of these environmental fungi are capable of infecting people. Treating these infections is challenging due to the fungi being more closely related to humans than you think\, as well as the emergence of antifungal drug resistance. Dr. Vargas-Muñiz is interested in understanding how the fungal cell works and aims to use that knowledge to develop a novel treatment for existing fungal infections. His lab also seeks to understand how the ability to infect humans evolves from environmental fungi\, particularly fungi from the ocean. \nJoin us on YouTube!\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
