SUMMARY:Nature Journaling (ages 3 to 7)
DESCRIPTION:Is your child a burgeoning artist? Do they come home from nature walks with pockets full of nature treasures? Let’s channel that energy into a nature journal! \nThis is a free program beginning at 10:30am in the Outdoor Classroom. We will start in the classroom as we personalize our nature journals\, before taking a nature walk around Prairie Ridge to begin our nature journaling journey! Come dressed for the weather and prepared to take a walk. Trails may be uneven and bumpy at times. \nPlease note that this program is intended for children of early childhood between the ages of 3 and 7\, however these ages are not hard boundaries. If you have questions about whether this program would be a good fit for your child\, please reach out to Emma at emma.blackford@naturalsciences.org. \n\nWe are also offering other Nature Journaling programs this month! \n\nNovember 5\, 10am–12pm – Intro to Nature Journaling (For adults; register here)\nNovember 19\, 2–3pm – Nature Journaling (for ages 6–12)

SUMMARY:Professional Previews
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about the ins and outs of a career in the STEAM fields. During this program\, we will meet Deb Bailey\, Coordinator of Exhibit Hall Programs at NCMNS. \nRegister Now!\nWith a career spanning 47 years\, Deb Bailey has had an unusual path to teaching science at NCMNS. She originally started with a dream to be an English teacher\, but first graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s of science degree in medical laboratory science. She spent 15 years working in hospital labs\, four years in AIDS drug development\, 10 years protecting people in medical research studies\, and a bunch of years writing everything from personal journals\, CliffsNotes and dictionaries to magazine articles and a book. \nSomewhere in there she also got married\, raised a son\, a few dogs and some gerbils. She paints undersea creatures and spooky Halloween scenes. And she can’t stop buying books because she wants to learn about EVERYTHING! All of this shows up in the Museum programs she creates: a game on biotechnology and drug development; a Styrofoam model of a honey bee brain she built in her kitchen; and classes on anything from the science of Twinkies to the chemistry of Revolutionary War invisible ink. Deb is stopped only when she runs out of time\, energy or questions. (And that last one never happens!) Her deepest hope is that her students walk away feeling they got her best effort\, and if she has one wish for them\, it is that they feel they are worthwhile\, and never give up on themselves or let anyone else stop them. It is her life mission and her way of saying “thank you” to an English teacher who saved her life. \nJoin her to learn how life’s unexpected twists and gifts resulted in a deeply satisfying science and “life” career. \n\nProfessional previews will take place on Zoom. Programs are recorded and registrants can access previous topics. \nWe recommend this program for middle school and up\, but all ages are welcome. Parents and teachers are invited to participate with their children or students.

SUMMARY:Teen Science Cafe: A Day in the Life of a Marine Scientist
DESCRIPTION:Using Technology to Monitor Climate Change\nHave you ever wondered what marine scientists actually do? Do all of them work with dolphins or coral? While there are a ton that do\, there are scientists doing cool work in all disciplines. From studying the bacteria that live on hydrothermal vents to recording the conditions that coral reefs can live in\, none of this science would be possible without the use of sensors. Sensor technology enables us to reliably monitor the things we want to study. With climate change increasing\, it is important that affordable sensors are readily available\, so we can measure many parameters and continue to mitigate human-caused changes. In this talk\, Liz Farquhar\, a current Marine Science graduate student\, will talk about what she and her friends actually do as marine scientists and demonstrate how they can use a low-cost water-level sensor to monitor and mitigate sea level rise. \nAbout our speaker\nLiz Farquhar earned a BS in environmental science from UNC-Chapel Hill and is currently working on her Masters of Marine Science from UNCW. She is interested in how technology can be used to help fight climate change and is working on developing a low-cost CO2 flux sensor to study the movement of carbon in/out of blue carbon habitats. \nThis program will be held in person at the Daily Planet Cafe AND streamed online on YouTube.
