SUMMARY:Educator Trek: Digging Prehistory
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to know where and how to find your own fossils to use in your teaching? If so\, then this workshop is for you! Join Research Curator of Paleontology Dr. Christian Kammerer as he teaches us all about the amazing fossils that can be found right in our own state. Step back in time millions of years to discover what life would have been like in prehistoric North Carolina. Join us as we learn about the history of Earth and the evolution of organisms based on evidence from the fossil record. We’ll learn about current research and collection methods in the field of paleontology as we make our own box sieves and then use them to hunt for fossils. We’ll practice our observation and identification skills on what we find\, and leave feeling empowered to find our own fossil specimens for activities in our classrooms. \nNOTE: This educator trek will take place IN THE FIELD at Green Springs Park in Greenville\, NC. Content of this workshop is unique and does not overlap with the museum-based “Permian Monsters” Educator Trek. We encourage anyone who can to sign up for both! \nCredit: 8 contact hours toward CEUs or Criteria II/III for North Carolina’s Environmental Education Certification Program \nRegister here \nAll in-person programs will follow current state and federal health guidelines and apply a range of safety measures to mitigate health risks\, including wearing masks while indoors\, in vehicles\, or in close proximity in the outdoors; smaller class sizes; moving into larger rooms (if indoors); keeping participants a safe distance from each other; and increasing sanitation efforts. \nPlease note that in-person programs are subject to change or cancellation depending on COVID-19 restrictions. A full refund would be provided in event of a cancellation.
