SUMMARY:Fall BioBlitz at Prairie Ridge!
DESCRIPTION:Calling all naturalists\, nature lovers and curious nature explorers — we need your help! \nThis fall\, Prairie Ridge Ecostation will be working to assess the biodiversity of its site through a BioBlitz\, a community-centered citizen science effort to document the biodiversity of a site within a short\, specified time frame. BioBlitzes are a great way to get a snapshot of the biodiversity of a site\, giving researchers and land stewards a better sense for what species live in and utilize the space at different times during the year. \nThis fall\, the BioBlitz will be conducted October 4-8\, 2022\, during open hours (9am to 4pm). Come walk the trails\, explore the garden\, scour the edge of the pond and more\, to help us document the diverse plants\, animals and fungi that call Prairie Ridge home! As you explore and find organisms you’d like to document\, use the iNaturalist app to submit your observations. Experts in the field will then help you ID what you saw\, and Prairie Ridge staff will work on the back end to collate everyone’s observations! These can be observations of plants\, insects\, bird\, mammals\, fungi\, etc. — anything goes! \nThese visits and explorations can be self-led at any time during our open hours. We recommend you come prepared for the weather\, wear closed-toed shoes\, and bring a water bottle. \nLooking for more guided ways to participate in the BioBlitz? Consider these programs below: \nPond Exploration — October 4\, 2–3pm \nBioBlitz with iNaturalist — October 5\, 10–11am \nBird Banding Demonstration — October 7\, 8–10am \nBioBlitz with iNaturalist — October 8\, 10–11am \nMoth-ing for the BioBlitz — October 8\, 8–10pm

SUMMARY:BioBlitz Pond Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Join our resident pond insect expert at the Prairie Ridge pond as we look at and document its biodiversity! We’ll dive into the world of the aquatic invertebrates that live below the surface while also keeping an eye out for above-water pond organisms like dragonflies\, damselflies\, birds\, frogs\, turtles\, and more! \nThis program is designed for visitors of all ages\, particularly those with an interest in learning more about citizen science! Families with kids welcomed and encouraged to attend\, as well as adults looking for an opportunity to dive into pond ecology. This is a free program beginning at 2:00pm at the Prairie Ridge pond platforms (follow the trail through the prairie and over the ridge until you see the Bird Blind and pond at the bottom of the hill). Come dressed for the weather and prepared to get wet! Downloading the iNaturalist app ahead of time will be helpful in preparing to document the critters you find.

SUMMARY:Misunderstood Monsters - Birds
DESCRIPTION:This virtual program requires pre-registration! Register here to receive the Zoom link to attend. \nIn the first episode of this four-part virtual series\, we’ll explore the birds who star in horror films — vultures\, crows\, and ravens. After taking a look at the folklore and culture that created these “monsters\,” we’ll break down the myths and look at the important roles these animals have in our ecosystem. \nThis virtual program is for teens and adults — some material may be too intense for younger children.
