SUMMARY:BUTTERFLIES OF PRAIRIE RIDGE
DESCRIPTION:Want to know more about butterflies? Teens and adults are invited to participate in a butterfly workshop! We’ll talk about common butterflies we see here at Prairie Ridge\, host plants for the caterpillars\, and how to attract butterflies to your yard. Then we’ll look in the native gardens the prairie to see how many butterflies and caterpillars we can find. Once we identify the species\, we’ll show you how to report data so it can be used for citizen science projects. You will take home a laminated butterfly identification guide along with seeds and/or pollinator plants for your own yard. \n*Please note that preregistration is required for this program. Cost is $3 for museum members\, $5 for non members. \nThis program is limited to 12 people and requires pre-registration. \nPlease register online here: \nNC Museum of Natural Sciences (blackbaudhosting.com) Registration closes 24 hours before the program begins. \nThis program is for ages 13 and up. Please dress for the weather\, and wear closed-toed shoes; sunscreen and hat are recommended. No prior knowledge needed\, just come willing to learn. We will meet inside the Outdoor Classroom\, located down the gravel path from the entrance.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: Wilderness Medicine and Safety in NC Outdoor Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Seth C. Hawkins\, MD\nAssociate Professor of Emergency Medicine\, Wake Forest University\nAssociate Director\, Wake Forest University Wilderness Medicine Fellowship\nMedical Director\, NC State Parks\, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources\nUS Forest Service Local Emergency Medical Advisor\, North Carolina Forests and Wilderness Areas\nMedical Advisor\, North Carolina Outward Bound School \nAmong many things\, living in a pandemic taught us how critical outdoor spaces are to our health and wellness. When many other North Carolina governmental entities closed\, most NC State Parks and national parks\, forests\, and wilderness areas remained open throughout much of the pandemic. However\, in the midst of record volumes of visitors\, this experience also reinforced the value of modern wilderness medicine and risk management principles in preventing and managing injuries and illness in outdoor spaces in North Carolina. Dr. Hawkins will discuss how to optimize safety and quality medical care in NC wilderness environments. \nJoin us on YouTube!\n\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
