DESCRIPTION:Join us for a quiet stroll along the paths at Prairie Ridge\, listening to the sounds of nature and learning to identify the birds\, insects and amphibians we hear along the way. \nThis program is for adults 18 and up. Please dress for the weather\, wear closed-toed shoes\, and bring water. Hats and sunscreen are recommended. Downloading the Merlin app (free) will be helpful but not necessary. \n\n“Science Within Reach” programs are specifically designed for adults who are interested in learning more about nature or contributing to different research projects\, or who want to meet other like-minded\, nature-loving adults in our community!

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: Cary Composts
DESCRIPTION:Srijana Guilford\, Waste Strategy and Impact Consultant\, Town of Cary\nLeigh Williams\, Co-Founder\, Toward Zero Waste\nChristine Wittmeier\, Organics Recycling Specialist\, NC Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS) \nNorth Carolina generates 2.5 million tons of food waste per year and the state has made reducing that amount of waste a priority. This year\, with a grant from the NC Department of Environmental Quality’s DEACS\, Cary launched a food waste recycling drop-off service. Partnering with a local non-profit to help develop outreach and education\, this effort has resulted in over 3500 drop-offs and nearly 11 tons of material collected for composting within four months. SUMMARY:Lifelong Adventure: Topsail Island Sea Turtle Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Learn about sea turtles and possibly witness the hatching of sea turtles on Topsail Island.  Participants will spend evenings on the beach “nest sitting” — waiting for baby loggerhead sea turtles to leave their sandy nests.  Daytime hours can be spent swimming\, beach combing or catching up on sleep.  We will also visit the Topsail Sea Turtle Hospital to learn about their work in caring for sick and injured sea turtles. \nParticipants are responsible for motel reservations and costs.  Lodging information will be given upon completion of registration. \nPlease note: You will be required to enter the following information for each registrant before you can complete your registration: emergency contact\, physician contact and health information (allergies\, conditions\, medications relevant to this field experience).
