SUMMARY:Special Lecture: A Nature Hike through Black STEM Success
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black History Month with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. \nToday’s guest\, Darrell Stover\, microbiologist\, science communicator and Head of North Carolina Science Museums Grant Program\, will examine the contributions of Dr. Harold Finley\, Sr.\, Head/Chairman of the Zoology department at Howard University\, a HBCU\, from 1947 to 1969. \nDr. Finley established Howard University’s connection to the research grant pipeline from 1943 to 1975. He taught and trained many research scientists all as a result of his focus on microscopy and protists\, one-celled microbes; more specifically\, Vorticella. His methods in studying these organisms and using them to teach are a rich global story that led to many practicing Black scientists and others. Finley’s story also has a personal connection to our guest; he was part of a team that judged Darrell’s award-winning high school science fair projects in county-wide competition. \nThis presentation is now VIRTUAL ONLY\, and will be broadcast online at the NCMNS YouTube channel. \nJoin the program on YouTube!
