SUMMARY:Building NC Communities Resilient to Extreme Precipitation
DESCRIPTION:This program has been canceled.  We are still accepting registrations for the 7/12 evening session. \nNorth Carolina experiences extreme weather\, from extreme heat to flooding.  You can help scientists by monitoring extreme precipitation events as a citizen scientist!  Join us to participate in the Citizen Science\, Civics\, and Resilient Communities (CSCRC) project and learn everything you need to know about extreme precipitation\, its impact on our communities\, and how you can help gather data for resilience planners who can use your data to help make our communities more resilient to extreme weather events! \nThis project includes three parts: \n\nAttend a one-hour introduction to the hazards of extreme precipitation in North Carolina and training in the Community Collaborative Rain\, Hail\, and Snow citizen science project.  You’ll hear from meteorologists with the NC State Climate Office and walk away with a concrete way that you can help mitigate the hazards of extreme precipitation in our state by measuring weather conditions at your own home.\nAttend a national forum on Wednesday\, July 14 from 5:30-7:30pm.  This forum is led by the Museum of Science in Boston and will cover how extreme precipitation events impact the people living in an area and how we can improve our resiliency.\nReport data to the CoCoRaHS condition monitoring at least 20 different days before August 14.\n\nAnyone who completes all three parts of the project will receive a free CoCoRaHS rain gauge so that you can continue collecting valuable data useful to meteorologists and other scientists\, resilience planners\, civil engineers\, and more!  The gauge is an approximately $50 value and provides a concrete way that you can help become a part of the solution as we work toward building communities that are resilient to extreme precipitation events in North Carolina. \nThis program is eligible for 4.5 hours of Criteria III credit toward the NC Environmental Education Certification Program.
