SUMMARY:Professional Previews
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about the ins and outs of a career in the STEAM fields. During this program\, we will meet Deb Bailey\, Coordinator of Exhibit Hall Programs at NCMNS. \nRegister Now!\nWith a career spanning 47 years\, Deb Bailey has had an unusual path to teaching science at NCMNS. She originally started with a dream to be an English teacher\, but first graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s of science degree in medical laboratory science. She spent 15 years working in hospital labs\, four years in AIDS drug development\, 10 years protecting people in medical research studies\, and a bunch of years writing everything from personal journals\, CliffsNotes and dictionaries to magazine articles and a book. \nSomewhere in there she also got married\, raised a son\, a few dogs and some gerbils. She paints undersea creatures and spooky Halloween scenes. And she can’t stop buying books because she wants to learn about EVERYTHING! All of this shows up in the Museum programs she creates: a game on biotechnology and drug development; a Styrofoam model of a honey bee brain she built in her kitchen; and classes on anything from the science of Twinkies to the chemistry of Revolutionary War invisible ink. Deb is stopped only when she runs out of time\, energy or questions. (And that last one never happens!) Her deepest hope is that her students walk away feeling they got her best effort\, and if she has one wish for them\, it is that they feel they are worthwhile\, and never give up on themselves or let anyone else stop them. It is her life mission and her way of saying “thank you” to an English teacher who saved her life. \nJoin her to learn how life’s unexpected twists and gifts resulted in a deeply satisfying science and “life” career. \n\nProfessional previews will take place on Zoom. Programs are recorded and registrants can access previous topics. \nWe recommend this program for middle school and up\, but all ages are welcome. Parents and teachers are invited to participate with their children or students.
