SUMMARY:Lunchtime Discovery: Plants\, Rare Earth Elements\, and Remediation - Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Colleen Doherty\, Associate Professor\, NC State University Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry\nEdmaritz Hernandez-Pagan\, PhD Candidate\, NC State University Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry \nThe growing importance of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) is driven by their role in modern technology. REES are used widely in various industries\, especially in technologies crucial for sustainability and in devices for decarbonizing the economy\, including magnet and battery technologies. Using plants\, we study the role of REEs in biology and use this knowledge to develop carbon-friendly methods for recovering REEs from waste sources like Acid Mine Drainage and Fly Ash. Our approach focuses on plants capable of thriving in polluted environments and efficiently accumulating REES. \nJoin us in the SECU Daily Planet Theater or watch the livestream on YouTube!\n\nLive Virtual Presentation hosted by NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ SECU Daily Planet Curator Chris Smith and the NC Department of Environmental Quality Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs staff. \nYou can post questions in the YouTube chat or tweet questions to #LunchTimeDiscovery and mention @NorthCarolinaEE. \nBrought to you by the NC DEQ Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
