An ancient evil defeated 5,000 years ago has returned from deep space in the form of a giant ball of black fire, and it’s coming to destroy the Earth. Our fate is in the hands of Korben Dallas, a taxi driver who doesn’t want to be a hero, and Leloo, a perfect beauty, a perfect being and a perfect weapon.

Ready your multipass, and take a trip with us from ancient Egypt to deep space in our July installment of Finally Friday: The Fifth Element. Plus, learn everything you ever wanted to know about the science of ancient Egypt, the power of the four elements, and much more.

We’ll host Dr. Marianne Barrier, Lab Manager, Genomics & Microbiology Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences as this month´s expert to help us separate the science from the fiction following the screening. Don’t miss it!

“The Fifth Element,” produced by Columbia Pictures, was released in May 1997, and received mostly positive reviews. Now, 21 years after its release, “The Fifth Element” still remains an over-the-top view of the future and is considered a science fiction cult classic.

In the film, taking place in the 23rd century, a flying taxicab driver and a young woman attempt to save the world from an ancient malevolent being by joining four ancient stones, which are the Earth’s only defense. While trying to recover the stones, they are viciously pursued by Mr. Zorg and his band of evil Mangalore alien henchman, who have been instructed by the great evil to also collect the stones.

The movie was directed by Luc Besson, who also wrote the screenplay, along with Robert Mark Kamen. It stars Bruce Willis (“Die Hard,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Moonrise Kingdom”), Mila Jovovich (“Resident Evil,” “Zoolander,” “The Three Musketeers”) and Gary Oldman (“Leon: The Professional,” “The Dark Knight,” “Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban”).
